The portolans are a type of nautical charts, that appeared in the 13th Century, and contain detailed descriptions of the coasts, provided by sailors from their direct observation. They served to support the navigation estimating the most accurate way possible, so they include details on the coastal geography like capes, gulfs, estuaries, islands, etc. so they are a cartographic product of great practical and aesthetic value that played an essential role in the development of navigation in the stage prior to the time of the Great Discoveries.
They are usually ornated and painted documents made in parchment, which in spite of their practical function, contribute to frequently have an extraordinary and luxurious appearance. Also, while the portolans are typical of the Middle Ages, they continued performing after that, increasing its decorative value.
