Spanish professor of Art History, researcher and curator at the Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando.
He joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1974 with the topic "El protogótico hispánico", and he was corresponding member of the royal academies of Valladolid, Seville, Toledo, A Coruña, Cadiz and Barcelona. He published numerous books, the most relevant being: "Una Historia del Arte", known as "El Azcárate", which was used for many years as reference for Philosophy and Literature students; "Monumentos españoles"; "La arquitectura gótica toledana del siglo XV"; "Escultura del siglo XVI", and "La arquitectura de los orígenes al Renacimiento".
Besides, he was the author of the artistic inventories of Madrid and Guadalajara, and collaborated in the monumental catalogue of the province of Álava. He combined his teaching and research activity with the board membership of secveral museums, such as the Prado since 1972, and the Naval Museum since 1983. He was awarded with the National Prize for Literature by Alonso Berruguete in 1961 for four essays. He was disciple of the archaeologist and historian Manuel Gómez-Moreno.
