He was a senator and professor of Spanish Law. Native of Valladolid, he was the son of Nicolás López and Josefa Gómez. He married María del Carmen Rodríguez Cano, with whom he had four children. One of them, Nicolás, was also professor of Law.

He studied the baccalaureate in Philosophy and in Laws at the Universidad de Valladolid and graduated in Laws on the 6th of July, 1842, obtaining the doctorate in 1842.

He was professor of History and General Disciple of the Church and Particular of Spain of the Universidad de Valladolid in 1851. He was appointed dean of the Faculty in 1874 and rector of the Universidad de Valladolid in 1879. He was professor of Civil, Common and Foral Law of that university in 1883 and of Public and Private International Law in 1884. He retired in 1890.

Other positions he held were:

Dean of the Colegio de Abogados de Valladolid in 1879. Judge of First Instance in 1854. He was appointed Substitute Judge of the Court of Valladolid in 1869. Councilor of the City Council of Valladolid in 1879. Chosen senator by the senate of the Universidad de Valladolid in 1891.
