He was a Spanish professor of Law who was linked to the krausism and the Partido Progresista, which he represented by Gerona at the central Committee of 1866. Son of the doctor Francisco Maranges and Clara de Diago, it is still preserved the manor house as a local cultural asset, where José María was born and where he spent his childhood.

In his brief biography we find a brilliant student and promising jurist. He probably wrote the declaration of rights of the Junta Revolucionaria of 1868, recited in front of the population in Madrid on the 8th of October of that same year. Declaration that was the draft of the first article of the democratic Constitution of 1869.

Among his works is outstanding Estudios Jurídicos, prefaced by Gumersindo de Azcárate and with a profile about the author written by Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Madrid, 1878.
