Giorgio Albertazzi was an Italian actor, scriptwriter and theatre and film director.
He joined the Italian Social Republic, better known as the Republic of Salò, where he reached the rank of lieutenant. However, after the end of the Second World War, he was imprisoned for two years due to his collaboration. After obtaining the amnisty thanks to Palmiro Togliatti, he left his architecture degree for acting. Hemade his debut in theatres with "Troilus and Cressida" (1949), a piece of Shakespeare and, on the next decades, he made a series of calssic works, many of them for television.
Since the fifties, he was also seen on the big screen acting in more than fifty movies like "Last year at Marienbad" (1961). Since 1969, he directed several television movies such as "Gradiva" (1970), including the miniserie "George Sand" (1981). He wrote his memories in 1988. In 1996, he was condecorated Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and, in 2002, he recieved the golden medal for his distinctive culture and art (Medaglia d'oro ai benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte). Since 2003, he has been the director of the Theatre of Rome. He got married with Pia de Tolomei in 2007.
