Pupi Avati was an Italian film director, producer and scriptwriter.

He was a jazz lover and clarinettist. At the beginning, he wanted to be a porfessional musician, though he decided to work on cinema at the middle of the sixties. He began his career directing horror movies and he is considered one the most popular Italian directors of this genre, highlighting: "La casa dalle finestre che ridono" (1976) and "Zeder" (1983). As jazz musician and lover, the TV serie that he wrote, "Jazz band" (1978), changed his cinematographic life. He started to make movies that showed his own experience, more nostalgic, introspective and autobiographic. He won several prizes and was nominated to many others (Palme d'Or, Silver ribbon, David di Donatello).
