Mario Bonnard was an Italian film director, scriptwriter, actor and producer.
He made his debut in cinema as actor in 1909 but quiting in 1924. He focused his career on silent films. He directed his first movie in 1916: "Catena". He worked with Ettore Petrolini in many films, the first one was "Mentre Il pubblico ride" (1919). With the arrival of talking films, he moved to Germany only to come back later to Italy and directed several movies with great actors like Assia Noris, Elsa Merlini or Amadeo Nazzari, among which it stood out "Il feroce Saladino" (1937). During Second World War, he directed some comedies like "Avanti c'è posto" (1942) and "Campo de' Fiori" (1943). Between the end of the fourties and the fifties, he directed movies like "Città dolente" (1948) an "The las days of Pompeii" (1959). Along his acreer, he participated in Italian, German and French works, thus becoming one of the most outstanding film directors in Europe.
He died the 22nd March 1965 in Rome.
