History:

German playwright, theatre director, actor and poet. Creator of the epic theatre. He was communist but never an activist in the German Communist Party. Persecuted by the Nazi regime, he escaped out of Germany in 1933, finding refuge successively in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, until he reached the United States in 1941, where he settled. However, the House Un-American Activities Committee cited him to testify due to his communist orientation. After his statement, in autumn 1947, he went again into exile to Switzerland, and he settled in East Berlin the year after, where he passed away.
