Spanish anthropologist and archeologist who exiled in Mexico.

He was born in San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa, the 9th September 1914. He moved to Madrid and studied in the "Maristas" and the "San Isidro" High School. He studied Architecture, Sculpture and Painting in the School of Sciences in Barcelona. However, he did not work in any of this fields and joined the "Escuela Popular de Guerra", graduating with the highest grade and the rank of second lieutenant.

Politically committed, he served in the Spanish Civil War in charge of a battalion that went to France after the fall of Barcelona. He was sent to Saint Cyprien concentration camp and, afterwards, went to Veracruz and headed to Chiapas, in Mexico. He worked there as topographer while studying in the National School of Anthropology and History, and became teacher and researcher of this institution. During the eighties, he became professor in the University of Chicago. He died in 1984 in Illinois.
