History:

Exiled Spanish teacher and writer. Daughter of the socialist sindicalist Francisco Arnáiz and civil governor of Guadalajara during the Spanish Civil War. Member of the JSU (Unified Socialist Youth)Executive. The partner of the communist leader José Cazorla (1906-1940), who was shot in the Civil War.

Arrested by the National Defence Council in March 1939, she managed to flee abroad, passing through Paris, where she helped exiles, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and, finally, she took refuge in Mexico. There she obtained her doctorate in Law at the UNAM, becoming the first female professor in the country and a jurist of enormous prestige. She met her new husband, Emilio Rodríguez Mato, with whom she had two children.

She received many decorations and designations, among them, in 1995 she was named Emeritus Professor of the Faculty of Law of the UNAM. Well known in Mexican universities, but practically unknown in Spain, the only exception to this documentary void is one of her few creative works, her memoirs entitled, Retrato hablado de Luisa Julián: Memorias de una guerra, published in Madrid in 1996.
