History:

Spanish anthropologist that was exiled. He was born in Orense in 1923. His parents came from Valencia: Hilario Genovés, telegraphist, and Concepción Tarazaga, teacher and educationalist. They lived in different places of Spain due to their jobs.

Santiago studied in the "Teresianas" and the Jesuits in the Canary Islands. He later moved to Valencia, where he studied in "Escuela Cossío", a school founded by his mother and other professionals like doctor Puche. He later studied in the International Institute of Valencia.

He was in Valencia when the Spanish Civil War started, but moved to France with his mother and siblings. His father was Chief of Communications and had to stay in Spain. Santiago and his family were for some time in a concentration camp in France, but later went to Marseille and headed to Mexico by ship, where his mother worked as teacher. He carried out his high school education in Jacksonville (EEUU) and the higher secondary-education course in the "Academia Hispano-Mexicana" between 1941 and 1943. He worked in a thread factory and joined the National School of Anthropology and History between 1948 and 1952. He made a PhD of Anthropology in the University of Cambridge (UK).

He was emeritus researcher in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Anthropology teacher in the USA after his retirement.
