History:

Spanish poet and essayist that was exiled. He was born in Alcoy (Alicante) in 1906. His family was a well-off one and had some business. He started his studies in the "Escolapios" in Alcoy and later studied Arts and Laws in Valencia. He collaborated in the "Hora de España" magazine until 1936, was member of "Alianza de Escritores Antifascistas" and joined the XI Force of the Army. He founded for the army the magazine "Granada de las Armas y de las Letras" and also participated in the "Brigadas Alfabetizadoras".

In February 1939, he went to France with his detachment and entered Saint Cyprien concentration camp. He got out one month later thanks to the help of "Alianza de Intelectuales Antifascistas". He moved to Mexico in 1940 on board "Sinaia" ship. In Mexico, he started a relationship with the Pellicer family, with Octavio Paz, who worked in "Taller" magazine with, and Elena Garro, his wife. He also collaborated in Mexican publications.

Since 1942 until 1944, he went to Argentina along with Máximo Klan and published "Las Ilusiones". He returned to Mexico in 1945. He went back to Valencia in 1947 and lived an exile within the country, avoiding the dominant trends. He published "El existir medita su corriente" (1949) among others. He won in 1982 the "Premio de las Letras del País Valenciano", later won the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, received an Honorary degree from the University of Alicante, and was desiganted honorary citizen of Alcoy. His whole prose work was published in 1985.

The "Instituto Alicantino de Cultura", that is accountable to the County Council, carries his name.
