History:

He was an Argentine soldier and politician. In 1804, he was arrested by the British along with his father Diego Alvear (1749-1830). He participated in the War of Independence at the Battles of Talavera, Yébenes and Ciudad Real. In 1812, he arrived at Buenos Aires along with José de San Martín (1778-1850) to fight for the independence of the Río de la Plata (River). Both created the regiment of Grenadiers on Horse and they took part in the battle of San Lorenzo. In 1813, he was appointed President of the Constituent General Assembly and the following year General in Chief of the besieging forces of Montevideo. Back to Buenos Aires, he was elected to stop the movement of José Gervasio de Artigas (1764-1850), the caudillo of the Eastern Strip, facing in Mercedes, Yi and in Minas. In 1815, he was appointed Supreme Director, but different circumstances would cause his downfall. In 1828, he was appointed Director of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata and Ituzaingo was the victor against the Empire of Brazil. In 1829, he practiced as Minister of War and ten years later, he was appointed Plenipotentiary Minister in the United States playing this position until February 1852.
