History:

José Gervasio Artigas (Montevideo, June 19, 1764 - Asunción, September 23, 1850). He was a soldier and entered in the ?Cuerpo de Blandengues? where reached the rank of Lieutenant. He started the campaign for the Independence of Uruguay obtaining victory in the battles of San Jose (February 20, 1811) and Las Piedras (May 18, 1811). The town council of Montevideo appointed him "Protector of the Eastern and the free people", and later, he was dedicated to organize the United Provinces. He got the support of the Eastern band and the Argentina provinces such as Cordoba, Corrientes, Entre Ríos and Santa Fe. But the opposition of Buenos Aires and Portugal defeated him forcing him to exile in Paraguay.
