History:

José de Canterac (Casteljaloux, Lot-et-Garone, France, July 29, 1787 ? Madrid, Spain, April 13, 1835). He was a soldier. He participated in the Spanish War of Independence and in the wars of emancipation of the viceroyalties of New Granada and Peru. In 1801, he enlisted in the army as Cadet of Walloon Guards, and became Second Lieutenant of artillery on October 8, 1803. He participated in numerous battles of the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1813). On September 1814, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of cavalry, on January 1815 as Colonel and on May of that year, Brigadier. In 1817, he was Chief of Staff and moved to Peru under the orders of the viceroy La Serna (1770-1832). He fought against San Martín (1778-1850) and Simón Bolivar (1783-1830). He brought peace to La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra. In 1821, he occupied the Valley of Jauja. He was defeated by Bolívar in Junín (August 6, 1824), and Sucre in Ayacucho (December 9, 1824). He returned to Spain, occupied various destinations as the command of the Campo de Gibraltar ? Gibraltar Countryside -. When Ferdinand VII (1784-1833) died, he was appointed Captain General of New Castile (1833). He died in Puerta del Sol of Madrid ? Gate of the Sun ? when he was trying to quell the revolt of the Cardero (January 18, 1835).
