History:

Henry Clay (Hanover Country, Virginia, April 12, 1777 ? Washington, June 29, 1852). He was an American statesman. From 1804 to 1809, he was member of the Kentucky legislature, in 1806 and 1809 was Senator from Washington and in 1810 he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives. He was one of the main defenders of the war between the United States and United Kingdom. Afterwards, he negotiated the peace of Ghent on December 24, 1814. Between 1811 and 1814, he was the President of the National Chamber on several occasions, promoted protectionism and was worried about to give United States the effective resources for the economic development. Between 1825 and 1829, he was Secretary of State of John Quincy Adams. He defended the participation of the country in the Pan American Congress of Bolívar (1826). He also was author of the Compromise of Missouri (1820) that is why he was called ?Gran Pacificador? ? Great Peacemaker -. He was elected Senator in 1831, and along with John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) and Daniel Webster (1782-1852), he directed the National Republican Party or Whig party which opposed to the Democrats of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). He was candidate on several occasions to the Presidency of the United States and his campaign of 1832 had a special importance, in which he faced Jackson, but despite his popularity, he was not elected. In 1844, he lost facing James Knox Polk (1795-1849) in the presidential elections. In 1848, he was rejected his designation as Republican candidate. He was elected to the Senate in 1849; he tried to reconcile the differences between the North and South regarding slavery in the newly annexed Mexican territories.
