Juan Martín de Pueyrredón y O'Dogan (Buenos Aires, December 18, 1777-March 13, 1850). He was a soldier and an Argentine politician. He was one of the protagonists of the process of independence of the Spanish colonies in America. In 1806, when the first British invasions in the Río de la Plata started, he joined the army who was commanded from Montevideo Santiago de Liniers (1753-1810). He also participated in the so-called Reconquista of Buenos Aires. In January 1811, he was appointed Governor of Chuquisaca, just at the moment in which occurred the defeat of the revolutionaries in the battle of Huaqui. He took the command of the army and led the retreat to the South. He was appointed member of the First Triumvirate in replacement of Juan José Paso (1758-1833). The Congress of Tucumán chose him, with the support of José de San Martín and Miguel Martín de Güemes, Supreme Director of the United provinces, position that he served until 1819. His role in the recovery of Chile to the Spanish Crown was very prominent and also his collaboration in the Organization of the army which helped in the independence of Peru. The President Rivadavia (1780-1845) appointed him member of the Military Commission which was responsible of the reform of the army. In 1829, he tried unsuccessfully to mediate between Juan Lavalle (1797-1841) and Juan Manuel de Rosas (1793-1877). At the beginning of the second Government, in 1835, he was exiled to Bordeaux and later to Rio de Janeiro and Paris. He returned to Buenos Aires in October 1849 and died a few months later.
