History:

José Antonio Páez Herrera (Curpa, Province of Barinas, Venezuela, June 19, 1790 ? May 6, 1873). He was a spanish-venezuelan politician. He participated in the processes of independence of Latin America being the hero of the independence of Venezuela. He obtained the rank of General in Chief of the army of Venezuela and when the Republic was consolidated, he was appointed President of Venezuela on three occasions. He fought the Spanish army, beating in 1815 the Colonel Sebastian de la Calzada in the battle of the Bank of Chire and in 1816 the Colonel Francisco López in the combat of Mata de la Miel. In 1819, Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) promoted him to General of Division and in 1821 appointed him General Commander of the military district which included the provinces of Caracas, Barquisimeto, Barinas and Apure. In 1829, the Assembly gathered in the convent of San Francisco in Caracas, did not recognize the authority of Bolivar and gave the power to Páez, who established a Provisional Government. He called elections to the Constituent Congress and sworn an oath as Constitutional President of Venezuela. Subsequently, he was elected President for the second time in the 1838 elections. Between 1859 and 1863, he was stationed in the United States as Plenipotentiary Minister of Venezuela in that country. He returned to Venezuela to fight against the federalists of Juan Crisóstomo Falcón (1820-1870) governing the country until June 1863. Finally, in August of that year, he went into exile and settled in New York (United States) until his death in 1873.
