Charles Frend was a British film director. He began his career in the world of cinema as an editor, working for Alfred Hitchcock and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He did not direct his own film until 1942 with "The Big Blockade". His first films and documentaries were low budget but, after the Second World War, they started to reach the critical acclaim and he gained reputation as a director. Among his most notable titles are: "The Cruel Sea" (1953), "Scott of the Antarctic" (1948), "The Sky Bike" (1967) and "Ryan's Daughter" (1970).
