Spanish doctor and communist politician. Leader of the Partido Socialista Unificado de Cataluña (PSUC/Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia). He was an essential personality of the last years of the anti‑Franco struggle in Catalonia and of the Spanish Transition to democracy. During this time he was elected Deputy for Barcelona of the Grupo Parlamentario Comunista (GCO/ Communist Parliamentary Group) in the constituent parliamentary term. Married. Doctor.

He was Secretary‑General of the PSUC, MEP and vice‑president of the European Parliament. He began his professional career as a pediatrician and he even traveled to Finland in order to specialize in the field of Neonatology.

Gutiérrez Díaz was one of the personalities that contributed to the consolidation of the Assembly of Catalonia, the unitary political platform constituted during the last years of the Franco regime.

The historian Andreu Mayayo stressed that, despite the fact that Gutiérrez Díaz's relationship with the PSUC began in 1959, 'his date of birth as a politician is 20 April 1963, the day of the execution of Julián Grimau', the PCE leader whose last days were shared in the jail of Carabanchel.
