María Moliner was a Spanish archivist, librarian, philologist, and lexicographer. She was the author of the "Diccionario de Uso del Español" (Dictionary the Spanish Use). Middle daughter of Enrique Moliner Sanz, country doctor, and Matilde Ruiz Lanaja, she had two siblings, Enrique and Matilde. She married Fernando Ramón Ferrando (1925) and they had four children: Enrique, Fernando, Carmen, and Pedro. She studied at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE; Free Teaching Institute), where Américo Castro helped her to discover her interest on linguistics and grammar. In 1921 she graduated in History from the University of Saragossa. One year later, she passed the public examination and she joined the Corps of Archivists, Librarians, and Archeologists and she was assigned to the General Archive of Simancas. Later, in 1924, she moved to the "Archivo de la Delegación de Hacienda de Murcia". She was the first woman who was able to teach in this University. One year later, she moved to Valencia where she worked in for the same institution. From 1929 to 1939 she worked with ILE in several projects such as Pedagogic Missions. Her reflections related to the librarian field are present in many texts and this proves how active her interest was. During the Spanish Civil War, she was in charge of the Consejo Central de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Tesoro artístico Tras la Guerra and in 1939 she was involved, together with her husband, in the purging process under Franco's Dictatorship. Her husband lost his chair at the university and was moved to Murcia, while María went back to Valencia. Afterwards, her husband was requalified and she started working at the Library of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Madrid. She became its director and she held this position until she retired in 1970. In 1952, she started working on a Spanish Language Dictionary and it was finished after 15 years. Her dictionary was finally published between 1966 and 1967.
