History:

Schellenberg was an American archivist. He graduated in History from the University of Pennsylvania, where he got a PhD in 1934. He started his career as Executive Secretary of the Joint Commission on Research Resources of the American Council of Learned Societies and of the Social Science Research Council. In 1935 he was assigned to the National Archives, after serving a few months as a historian of the National Park Service. In 1945 he left the National Archives in order to work as Archivist at the Office of Price Administration for three years. In 1948 he returned to the National Archives as adviser of the United States archivist. Schellenberg was appointed Director of Archival Administration in 1950 and Assistant Archivist of the National Archives in 1956. He retired in 1963 and died in 1970.

As a theoretician of Archivist Science, he is the author of several manuals and publications that are considered as a fundamental part of the archival theory and practice of the United States.
