History:

Spanish lawyer, banker, and politician.

Law Degree from the University of Barcelona (1950). In July of 1953 he joined the Spanish State Attorneys. In 1965 he entered as Financial and Administrative Director of RENFE, being named Secretary‑General in 1967. In 1968 he returned to the active service of the Spanish State Attorneys, being assigned to the Supreme Court. Director‑General Manager of Banco Hispano Americano (1973).

In July 1977 he was appointed Minister for Industry and Energy, ceasing in that position in February 1978 and he was also Minister for Health and Social Security (1980-1981). Moreover, he was Minister for Defense (1981‑1982) just after the coup d'état of 23 F, and during his mandate Spain joined NATO (May 30, 1982).

Alberto Oliart was deputy of Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD/Union of Democratic Centre) for Badajoz in the I parliamentary term (1979-1982) of the Spain Courts.

He has also been an adviser of Banco Urquijo (since 1973), of Explosivos Rio Tinto, of Rio Tinto Minera, S.A., of S.A. Cros, of Barral Editores, S.A., of RENFE, etc.

After the UCD dissolution he left active politics and devoted himself, among other occupations, to the legal profession.
