French researcher, writer, producer, film director and scripter. Specialized in documentaries about underwater life. Married with Simeone Melchior Cousteau (1917-1990), and Jean-Michael Costeau (1938-) and Philippe Cousteau's father (1940-1979). Along with the engineer Émile Gagnan (1900-1979), he was one of the inventors of the current autonomous diving suit. Cousteau studied at the French Naval School, but he became an artillery officer due to an accident, whereupon he focused on his passion for the underwater life. Cousteau won a Palme d'Or in the Cannes Film Festival for his well-known documentary "Le Monde du silence" (1956), based on his book of the same name, along with Louis Malle (1932-1995). Some other Cousteau's works are "Voyage au bout du monde" (1976), "Cousteau: Oasis in space" (1976) and "The Cousteau Odyssey" (1978).
