History:

Swedish actor, scriptwriter, and film director. He studied in the Dramatens elevskola, after which he began his career as an actor. Later he decided to focus on directing and worked at the Dramaten theater and later at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. During this period he also directed some 15 films, including "Leva på 'Hoppet'" (1951), which won a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 1972 he became director of the Metropolitan Opera of New York, but died shortly afterwards in a car accident. Some of his works as director are "Ballongen" (1946), "Carmen" (1960), and "Miss and Mrs Sweden" (1969).
