History:

He was a British screenwriter, producer and director. He began his career as a theatre actor at the age of five; he later acted in films such as "Dick Turpin" (1933). After that he worked as an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) in the film "Jamaica Inn" (1939). After participating in World War II, during which he shot several documentaries, he was hired by the company Gaumont British to direct low-budget films. In the 50s and 60s he shot a series of films based on the Second World War which were very successful, such as "Reach for the Sky" (1956). Other notable films include "Alfie" (1966) and the James Bond films "You Only Live Twice" (1967), "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) and "Moonraker" (1979). In 2002 he directed his last film: "Before You Go".
