Centeno, Lucas (1730-1812)

He was an Augustinian friar and a government representative. He was the son of Francisco Jiménez Centeno and María Isabel de León. He moved to Michoacan to join the Augustinian Order. He studied humanities and philosophy with the Jesuits and theology in the Augustinian convent of Michoacan. There he was a teacher of the professed and a reader in philosophy. In 1760 he was sent to Rome to specialize in canon law and to obtain a doctorate. After his return to New Spain he was elected prior of the convent of Michoacan, but in 1763 he had to move to Madrid to act as procurator in a jurisdictional conflict between the Augustinians and the diocesan clergy. In 1774 he was appointed prior and rector of the convent of Guadalajara and in 1782 he held the highest position of his order.
He was the godfather of Agustín de Iturbide and his friendship with Miguel Hidalgo has also been noted.
He was elected the Government Representative of the province of Querétaro in the Cortes (parliament) in 1810, but he did not go to the Peninsula because of his health problems.
