Fernández Villamil Curiel, Bernardo (1776-1835)
San Roque (Cádiz, España) 1776 - València (España) 1835-02-13
He was a military and a government representative. He was the son of Antonio Fernández Villamil March and Gabriela Antonia Curiel Monsalve. He entered the army as a cadet in 1789, soon being promoted to the rank of sub-lieutenant. He moved to America and lived in Cuba and New Orleans before settling in New Spain where he joined the infantry corps. He had a close relationship with the viceroy, Felix Maria Calleja, with whom he ended up having family ties. Bernardo's wife, María Josefa de la Gándara, who he married in San Luis de Potosí, was the cousin of Félix María Calleja's wife, María Francisca de la Gándara. The couple had eight children.
He was very active in the actions against Mexican insurgents, one of which ended with the arrest of Miguel Hidalgo. As a result, he was appointed governor of the New kingdom of León and promoted to colonel. It was precisely these obligations that prevented him from attending the Cádiz Cortes (parliament) for which he was elected Government Representative of San Luis de Potosí. In 1819, before the declaration of independence from Mexico, he moved to the Iberian Peninsula. He was then appointed governor of Madrid and Valencia.
