History:

Spanish soldier and deputy. Colonel of Infantry during the Peninsular War and deputy for Extremadura in the Cortes (1810-1813). He was a member of Freemasonry nicknamed "Balerís". Son of Francisco Lorenzo Fernández de Córdoba Ulloa, 4th Marquis of Encomienda, and Catalina Golfín. As a prominent liberal he participated intensively in the Cortes of Cádiz, he took part in the commission that wrote up the Rules of Procedure of the House, and of the War Committee. He was one of the members who signed up the Constitution of 1812.

He married María Dolores Melgarejo, and they were the parents of two children: Francisco and Antonio. In order to keep the surname "Golfín" they decided to hyphenate it, that is the reason why they are called themselves "Fernández-Golfín Melgarejo".

During the absolutist regime, on 15th December 1815, he was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment in the castle of Santa Bárbara in Alicante. He was released from prison during the Trienio Liberal (Liberal Triennium), was appointed political chief of Alicante, and then deputy for Extremadura in the Cortes between 1820-1822.

The Colonel of the Queen's Regime, he served in the Ballesteros army in the invasion of Angouleme in 1823 while being Acting Minister of War in Cádiz, where the Government had taken refuge. He went into exile to Lisbon and Gibraltar after the absolutist reaction. In 1831, he joined the attempted uprising against King Ferdinand VII, led by General José María Torrijos. However, the coup d'état failed, and they were taken prisoners and shot in Malaga. Francisco Fernández Golfín died at the age of 64.
