He was an American playwright, poet and novelist. He studied English literature and became a professor of English but moved to San Francisco to write for the San Francisco Chronicle even though he was fired after getting infected with the Spanish flu. He found work in New York for The New York Globe and New York World. In 1923 he wrote his first play, White Desert. His works were in many different styles and some were adapted for the cinema. Anderson wrote many scripts based on plays and novels by other authors, such as All Quiet on the Western Front (1939) and Death Takes a Holiday (1934). He died in 1959 at the age of 70 from a stroke.
