History:

Spanish violinist, orchestra conductor, composer and teacher.

Born on 16 October 1876 in Cuenca (Spain). Son of Manuel Figuerido Arocena, a military musician who gave him his first solfège, harmony and violin lessons, which he later continued at the Academia Municipal de Irún. He moved to Paris in 1890, attended the conservatory, and embarked on a concert tour of France and England, with the pianist Ricardo Viñes. He also gave concerts with Fabián de Furundarena. In 1901, he married the pianist Claudia Torija Elices, and had two daughters, María del Carmen and María Victoria Figuerido Torija, who followed in their parents' musical footsteps.

César began teaching in 1900 at the Academia de Música de Irún, where he later became director. He reorganised the local band and directed it personally until 1914. In December 1913, he won a place as a violin teacher at the Academia de Música de San Sebastián, which he maintained until 1919. He was eventually promoted to deputy director and librarian of that academy. In 1918, he established the Sociedad de Música de Cámara in San Sebastián. He also conducted the orchestra of the Gran Kursaal from the grand opening in 1922 until 1924, when the casino closed and the ensemble disbanded. He took that opportunity to found the Orquesta Filarmónica Donostiarra, which only lasted until 1928. In 1931 Figuerido tried again, recruiting seventy teachers to form the Orquesta Filarmónica de San Sebastián, although it too disbanded in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War began. He was part of the team that transformed Donostia-San Sebastián's Academia de Música into the Conservatorio Municipal, where he held the violin chair until 1955. He worked for the Agencia Internacional Teatral y de Conciertos, where he arranged concerts for Alfredo Casella, Maurice Ravel and other noted musicians. On 6 September 1929, he wrote to Manuel de Falla to discuss the possibility of organizing a concert tour to the leading philharmonic societies of Spain and Europe. He published "Compendio de la técnica de violín" in 1952. César Figuerido Guelbenzu occasionally signed his texts as "Zubelgueiro" or "Gueritorfy", pseudonyms created by rearranging the syllables of his last names. He died at the age of seventy-nine in Tolosa (Gipuzkoa).
