History:

Spanish choirmaster, composer, teacher and folklorist.

He was born on January 14, 1875 in Irún (Spain). In 1896 he was named choirmaster of the Salamanca cathedral. On September 29, 1898, the directors of the Escuela de Nobles y Bellas Artes de San Eloy appointed him teacher of solfège and piano. He actively participated in the cultural life of Salamanca, attending events like the artistic-literary evening of the Círculo de Obreros de Salamanca on April 23, 1899. In July 1908 he passed the exam to become a music teacher at the Escuela Normal de Maestros de Salamanca. One year later, he was given the position of special teacher. On various occasions, he was appointed as a member of the examination boards for the competitive exams of Music teachers at the Escuelas Normales Superiores de Maestras in Ávila, Cáceres, and Zamora. He conducted the children's choir from Asilo de la Vega at the Teatro Bretón in Salamanca on October 25, 1915. In October 1929 he worked with the Coral Universitaria Salmantina. Carmen Carabias Martín, María Ramón y Laca and Luis de Bernardi were among his students. He retired from his position as a music teacher at the Escuela Normal de Salamanca on January 17, 1945.

In his facet as a composer, Goyenechea was responsible for the motets "Ave María", "O salutaris Hostia" (1903), "Himno a la Santísima Virgen del Juncal, Patrona de Irún" (1933), "Himno al centenario de la medalla milagrosa", "Cánticos sagrados" and "Bone Pastor" (1943). He also wrote songs, such as "La alegre estudiantina" (1934), but his greatest contributions were the folk song compilations "Fragancias del campo de Castilla" (1943) and "Ramillete de cantos charros". He composed "Brisas del mar", "Primavera de amor" (1914), "Rayons du soleil" (1920) and other works for piano. "Himno a la mujer española" is another of his well-known compositions. He passed away on May 11, 1951.
