Spanish composer, conductor, pianist, city councillor and teacher.
Born in Arjona (Jaén) in 1894, and passed away in Córdoba on 18 August 1936. Brother of the composer and pianist Adolfo Pérez Cantero, and Rosario Pérez Cantero. He married Carmen Fustegueras Méndez. In March 1917 he accompanied Matilde Blanco Granados, a mezzo-soprano from Córdoba, on piano during her concert at the Centro Filarmónico Eduardo Lucena. In 1927 he was best man in the wedding of the piano instructor Ángel Gracia. Director of the Conservatorio de Música de Córdoba, and teacher at the Centro Filarmónico, in 1930 he became the centre's artistic director, when José Pablos Barbudo resigned. Francisco Algaba Luque, a composer and conductor from the town of Castro del Río in Córdoba, was also at the centre with him. In 1931 he joined Córdoba City Council as an elected representative of the republican-socialist coalition, and the committee responsible for organising fairs and festivals in Córdoba. That same year, he conducted the socialist choir during a civic demonstration on Labour Day. Pérez resigned his seat on the governing council in 1932, and in 1933 he conducted the Sexteto Córdoba in a tribute to Maestro Martínez Rücker, broadcast by the provincial radio station. Over the years, he conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Córdoba and the orchestras of the Gran Teatro and Ideal Cinema, among other ensembles. In 1932, he asked Manuel de Falla if he could provide arrangements for reduced orchestra of some of his works. He authored several compositions, including "Los rondadores" (lyrics by Francisco Arévalo), "Platero cordobés" and "Los trovadores". He was arrested and killed by a firing squad on 18 August 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
