History:

Spanish composer, orchestra director, teacher and lawyer.

Born on 24 March 1889 in San Sebastián. He had four siblings, and the eldest was the composer José María Usandizaga.

He received his music formation in the Academia Municipal de Música de San Sebastián, and studied the Law career. After the death of his brother in 1915, he promoted his music, to which he dedicated his professional career. He revised with Pedro Sorozábal's help, in 1918, the unfinished work of his brother José María "La llama" (1914-1915), year in which it premiered; and he adapted the zarzuela "Las golondrinas" (1913) as an opera in 1929.

On 8 April 1921, he congratulated Manuel Falla for the success that "El sombrero de tres picos" (1917-1919) had in Madrid. He was named director of the Conservatorio Municipal de San Sebastián in 1941, in which he was professor of Esthetic and Music's History and Instrumental Ensemble, until his retirement in 1963. He founded the Orquesta Sinfónica del Conservatorio donostiarra, whose presentation took place in March 1942. The Ayuntamiento de San Sebastián distinguished him with the Silver Medal of la Ciudad; he was named honorary member of the Orfeón Donostiarra; advisor of the Asociación de Cultura Musical; and member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

His work "Itzayá" (1924) for choir, was the most interpreted of his catalogue, where there are also other works like "Ave Maris Stella" for choir; "Canciones de niños" and "Tres canciones populares" for orchestra; "La rana y la gallina", "Mambrú se fue a la guerra" or "Seis canciones sobre letras del romancero" for choir; "Asturiana", "Valenciana" and "Vals en Mi menor" for piano; "Suite sobre motivos que tuvieron su época" (1935) for orchestra; or the zarzuela "La capa del diablo" (1945). He was also author of the soundtracks of the films "¡Qué contenta estoy!" (1941) and "El doctor Cañamón" (1942). He passed away on 28 June 1964 in San Sebastián (Spain).
