History:

Argentinian composer, orchestra conductor and teacher.

Born on 31 January 1913 in San Nicolás de los Arroyos (Argentina), and passed away on 31 August 1988 in Buenos Aires. He studied composition and orchestration in Buenos Aires with Constantino Gaito. In 1937 he won a special award from the city of Buenos Aires for the music and libretto of the ballet "Amancay", which premiered at the Teatro Colón. His song "Norteña" (1937) for voice and piano was published in "La Prensa". He received a grant from the Comité Nacional de Cultura that allowed him to travel across South America in 1939, and he was director of the Teatro de La Plata from 1952 to 1953.

Inspired by traditional Argentine music, he composed works like the ballet "El malón" (1943) and the opera "El oro del Inca" (1945), both of which premiered at Buenos Aires's Teatro Colón. Iglesias also wrote "La noche colonial" for the stage; the symphonic poem "Leyenda del lago andino"; "Concerto universitaire" (1952) for soprano, baritone, two choirs and instrumental ensemble; "Embrujo pampeano" (1952) for piano and orchestra; "Estampes" (1956) for choir; and a string quartet and several piano pieces. He was a member of the Sociedad Nacional de Música, secretary of the Asociación Argentina de Compositores (1940-1942), a teacher of harmony and musical culture at Conservatorio Fracassi (1941), and chorus and orchestra instructor for the Filarmónica de Santa Cecilia (1941). He wrote the foreword to "Manual de cultura musical" (1954) by Salvador Fracassi del Carril. The composer Manuel de Falla was among his musical contacts.
