History:

Spanish musicologist, composer, teacher and music critic.

He was born on July 31, 1897 in Valencia (Spain) and grew up in Vilavella de Castelló. Eduardo Ranch married Amparo Sales and had two children: Eduardo, a philosophy teacher, and Amparo.

At the age of sixteen, Eduardo moved to Valencia to complete his high school studies. He entered the city conservatory in 1913 and became a board member of the Sociedad Filarmónica de Valencia. After the creation of the 2nd Spanish Republic he moved to Madrid, joined the left-wing political party Izquierda Republicana and worked as a music teacher between 1934 and 1936 at the Escuela Internacional Plurilingüe, a school run by his friend Vicente Llorens. He was close to Pío Baroja, whom he met in the Spanish capital in 1934. In the course of his career, he came to know great composers like Maurice Ravel, Alexander Glazunov, Manuel de Falla and the musicologist José Subirá.

On February 2, 1925, the Sociedad Filarmónica de Valencia held a tribute to Falla featuring the Orquesta Bética de Cámara conducted by Ernesto Halffter. Ranch wrote a biography of the Cádiz-born composer for the programme. He attended the concert with his teacher Jacinto Ruiz Manzanares and other members of the Sociedad Filarmónica?s board of directors. In a letter dated April 27, 1930, he also asked Falla for a copy of the brochure "El cante jondo. Cante primitivo andaluz" (1922).

Ranch gave lectures on his research project "Pequeños estudios barojianos. Vida de Baroja en Valencia" (1936); wrote a biography of the composer Vicente Martín y Soler in 1936; rescued documentation on the master organist Juan Bautista Cabanilles in 1943; and, two years later, published "Centenario de la estancia de Franz Liszt en Valencia" (1945). He worked as a music critic for Radio Nacional de España and regional newspapers in Valencia. As a composer, he wrote the music for the "Himno de la Escuela Internacional Española" (1935), with lyrics by José Antonio Muñoz Rojas, and other works, including "Yo solo" (1947), "Canción del pirata" (1948), "Coral a cuatro voces" (1949), "Llanto en la colina de los viñedos" (1949) and "Cuquita la del pay pay" (1952). He passed away on February 10, 1967 in Valencia (Spain).
