Spanish composer, folklorist, music critic and teacher.
Born on 13 November 1875 in León (Spain). He was a student of the following teachers: Antonio Llanos Bereta, Dámaso Zabalza and Pedro Fontanilla in Madrid's Conservatory. In 1902, he started his career in music critic in the diary "El País"; there he published several articles until 1917. In 1903, he edited the manual "Músicos españoles". He also published the articles "La música de Wagner" (1903) and "El Colegio de los Colorados, de León" (1904) in the magazine "Fidelio". In 1907, the Orquesta Sinfónica of Madrid interpreted one of the movements of his "Suite romántica", and years later, he obtained his first success with "Las hilanderas" (1915), symphonic work that Enrique Fernández Arbós and Bartolomé Pérez Casas programmed with their respective orchestras. This year, he occupied the direction of the "Revista Musical Hispanoamericana". One of his conference was the one he gave in the Asociación General de Profesores de Orquesta, with the title "Cuestiones de técnica y estética musical" (1915). In 1916, the Cuarteto Renacimiento premiered their "Cuarteto de La menor", in a concert of the Sociedad Nacional de Música, work that was awarded by the Ateneo de Barcelona. In another of the same association, on 24 May 1918, he premiered "Égloga", symphonic impression, one of the most representative works of his composititional style. The Unión Musical Española (UME) published "Sonata en Re mayor" for violin and orchestra in 1926, piece that had been written previously. In 1929, he was named director of the magazine "Ritmo", where he published articles like "Manuel de Falla" (1929), "Aspectos discutibles del llamado arte nuevo" (1930) or "Esperpentos sonors" (1935). He also collaborated with the magazine "Música" and in the "Revista Musical de Bilbao", where he published "La cuestión de la ópera española" (1913).
On 21 December 1931, he read, in the Teatro María Guerrero of Madrid, the conference "Falla y su concierto de cámara", with motive for the centenary of the foundation of the Real Conservatorio de Música de Madrid. With Falla, he had correspondence between 1908 and 1935.
Other of his musicographic works were "Soliloquios de un músico español", "Programa para la asignatura de música de cámara" and "La música en las escuelas". As a composer, in addition to the already reviewed, the following titles stand out: "Danzas montañesas", "Escenas populares españolas" and "Paisaje montañés" for orchestra; "Canciones leonesas" (four notebooks), "Serenata oriental", "Cuatro piezas españolas, Serenata andaluza" or "Canción española" for piano; "Castilla", "Canciones leonesas" or "Danzas humorísticas 3 y 5" for band; "Danza española" and "Danza montañesa" for guitar. He passed away in 4 November 1937 in Madrid (Spain).
