Spanish philologist.
He graduated in Philosophy and Arts at the University of Barcelona, after that, he went to Madrid to obtain his PhD in 1930 at the Central University, where he attended classes with Ramón Menéndez Pidal. After his PhD, he continued studying at the universities of Berlin and Leipzig. In his return, in 1934, he was the assistant of Pompeu Fabra at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he worked as an associate professor. He was also secretary editor of the Historical-Archaeological and technician at the Lexicographic Offices of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans since 1942, he became the General Secretary until 1989 when he was promoted to Honorary General Secretary. In 1946 He along with Pere Bohigas y Miquel Coll Alentorn founded the Societat Catalana d'Estudis Històrics as a subsidiary of the Institute. Since 1947 he was the Delegate of the Institute in the International Union of Academies, an institution where he ended up becoming a member of the governing board (1959-1968), the vice president twice (1961-1964 and 1965-1968), and Honorary President (1989). Besides, in 1947 he founded the magazine Estudis Romànics. Since 1961 he also represented the Biennial Assemblies of the Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences of UNESCO.
In recognition of his educational activities and the promotion of Catalan, he received numerous awards and distinctions such as the Catalan Literary Lifetime Achievement Award (1983), the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia (1990), and the Ramón Fuster Award (1982).
He is the father of the translator and lexicographer Núria Aramon.
His scientific activity focused on three topics: Philology, Bibliography, and the teaching of grammar and stylistics. He reflected these topics in his publications, for instance, the critical editions of medieval texts, in Catalan and Provençal and works such as "Novel·letes exemplars" (1934), "Cançoner dels Masdovelles" (1938) o "Bibliografia de la llengua i literatura catalana" (1925-1934).
Investigó en el Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN) de Madrid el 2 de noviembre de 1940. En 1955 investigó en el Archivo de la Corona de Aragón (ACA) de Barcelona.
