Juan José Ruiz de Apodaca y Eliza (Cádiz, Spain, 3 February 1754- Madrid, 11 January 1835).
Spanish noble, politician and soldier. 1st Count of Venadito. General commander of the Escuadra del Océano, London's ambassador, Captain General of Cuba and the two Floridas, Nueva España's Viceroy (1816-1821) and Field Marshal Captain General of the Armada.
He was the son of Tomás Ruiz de Apodaca y López de Letona and of Eusebia de Eliza y Lasquetti. When he was Nueva España's Viceroy, he was conciliatory with the supporters of the independence and the insurgents. Because of that, he was very popular, and he pacified the uprising to the metropolis. When Trienio Liberal (Liberal Triennium) began in 1820, according to the new rules of the Constitution, he was appointed political chief of Nueva España (1820-1821) and 16th Captain General of the Spanish Royal Army. He left this position after the uprising of absolutist soldiers and their leader, Agustín Itúrbide (1783-1824), who reached an agreement with the pro-independence and suspended the implementation of the new orders. He was a member of Calatrava's order since 1783. He died in Madrid in 1835.
