Spanish historian.
Bachelor of Law and Philosophy and Arts at the Central University, he obtained his PhD in 1920 with the thesis on History of the postal service in America. He was a follower of Antonio Ballesteros Beretta and he befriended Pedro Sainz Rodríguez, with whom he founded the magazine Filosofía y Letras (1915-1920), and Juan Contreras y López de Ayala, the marquis of Lozoya. After entering the Cuerpo de Oficiales de Correos, where he was professor of Historia del Correo, he held a chair in February 1926 for History of Spain at the University of Murcia, where he would become dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts. While in Murcia he worked especially on his second main topic of study along with the history of postal service, which was politics and ministers of the Illustration. He wrote some works about this topic such as El Conde de Floridablanca. Siglo XVIII. Notas para su estudio (1929).
Since November 1939 he held temporarily the chair for Modern History of Spain at the University of Madrid, which he permanently owned in 1943. He was one of the key members of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas during the post-war. He worked in this institution as the undersecretary and secretary of the Jerónimo Zurita High School, secretary of the magazine Hispania and editor of the Revista de Indias. He was close friends with José Ibáñez Martín. Besides, he was appointed director-general of University Education in 1946, he held that position until 1951. He collaborated with the Revista de Estudios Políticos and in newspapers such as ABC, Arriba or El Español. He died in 1958 when he was participating in the summer courses of the Mendez Pelayo International University in Santander.
