History:

Spanish professor of French, researcher, and priest.

He was born on 12th August 1890 in Santo Domingo de Silos (Burgos) and died on 4th May 1970. Son of a farmer. He obtained a baccalaureate diploma at the Soria High School. He studied Philosophy and Arts as an independent studies student and finished the degree in three academic years. Between 1920 and 1921 he studied three subjects at the University of Oviedo, he continued studying at the University of Zaragoza. On 27th October 1931, he finished his PhD in Philosophy and Arts, specialising in History. On 24th January 1931, he received an extraordinary History Doctorate Award at the former Central University. In the 1920s he lived for a while in Paris and in its surroundings, where he worked as a Spanish teacher and, in addition, he exercised the function of an assistant priest at the parish of Saint-Marcel. On 14th March 1927, he applied for a grant of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas (JAE) to research medieval files of the archives of Marseille and Paris. The request was supported by a recommendation of the general secretary of the Institut d'études hispaniques de l'Université de Paris. At first, his requests were denied due to the lack of appropriation of funds, nonetheless, the board approved one of his requests on the 5th October 1928. Later, they provided him with more grants to study in Paris and Marseille. On the 23rd of September 1932, he passed the competitive exam to be a French teacher in high school, and on the 1st of October 1932, he assumed his new French teacher position at the Orihuela High School. He requested to postpone the grant of the JAE to 1933. It was accepted and on the 27th of February 1933, a ministerial order postponed the grant for ten months to research the Spanish Visigoth codices from the Abbey of Silos which were preserved in the Section of manuscripts of the Biblioteca Nacional de París. He enjoyed the grant from the 1st of March 1933 onwards. During his stay in France, he submitted exhaustive reports of the developments of his research to Gonzalo Jiménez de la Espada. In 1934, he came back to Spain and was appointed teacher of the French language of the National Institute of Ciudad Real. After that, he achieved the position of director in that Institute until the 24th of September of 1936 after being dismissed by the republican government. He hid for 30 months due to the threats that he received for his sympathy for the military rebellion side. After the arrival of the Franco's Army to Ciudad Real on the 29th of March 1939, he was interrogated several times. In 1940, he was confirmed to return to his former teaching position, and, a year later, he became again the Institute director. He was involved in the purge of several colleagues, such as Joaquín Álvarez Pastor when he became vice-president of the purge commission of the Ministry of National Education in Madrid. During Francoism, he wrote numerous books about the French language and literature and published several history works. In 1950 he published his doctoral thesis, entitled Colección diplomática de San Salvador de Oña (822-1284), by the Escuela de Estudios Medievales del C.I.S.C. (School of Medieval Studies of the C.I.S.C.) with a prologue by Ramón Menéndez Pidal. He ended his teaching career as a professor at the Instituto de San Isidro in Madrid.
