Colegio de la Concepción de Albacete (España)Other forms
from 1708 to 1767
The "Colegio de la Concepción" (Conception College) in Albacete is an institution that was founded rather late. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Order was already present in the capital of each province in the peninsula. Thus, the Jesuit school opened in 1709 thanks to the contribution of private donations given by magnate families in the city. There was a need of creating a formative institution of quality. Its establishment was not easy since other Orders in Albacete opposed. In the first years, it counted on a Grammar teacher and a mentor of basic education. Despite the difficulties in 1764, the Jesuit school was accepted by the rest of the already existing schools. Then, it outpaced the Jesuit schools nearby. Even though the school appeared rather late, it counted on a quality library, as it is described in several papers based on it. The College, as the rest of Jesuit schools, stopped operating due to the Decree of expulsion of Charles III. When it was expelled, it counted on 10 Jesuits, 4 of whom were teachers of morals, grammar, predication and missions.
Tras la expulsión el edificio fue utilizado con fines militares.
