History:

The "Colegio de la Concepción de Nuestra Señora y del Buen Consejo in Pontevedra, currently known as the College of the Society of Jesus was the fourth college of this Order in Galicia. The first person interested in opening a Jesuit school in Pontevedra was Concello, who always favoured it. Its benefactors were Antonio Mosquera Villar y Pimentel and his wife María de Pimentel de Sotomayor, who were in charge of the institution since 1655 when the opening's funds were lost. Its opening was agreed from Peru by Father Jorge de Andrade since 1644. Even though some papers and historians point out that 1650 was the founding year, there are documents that confirm that it started operating at the beginning of the 17th century. Since its creation, it received donations and inheritances that enriched its patrimony. In 1714, an attached temple was built, which is now known as the parish of San Bartolomé. It counted on a Grammar chair, with two teachers, and it printed several written works. It became inoperative due to Charles III's Decrees of expulsion in 1767.

Context:

After the Jesuits’ expulsion from Spain, the building was used for several activities; it served as a school for children, as the “Sede Normal de Maestros” or the Provincial Institute as well as an orphanage or a hospice under the Provincial Council’s tutelage. Later, it was the Nursing School and the faculty of Fine Arts and Social Sciences. It is nowadays known as “Edificio Sarmiento” (Sarmiento Building), name that was given because Father Sarmiento studied in it. The church is an exhibition hall and the college is the Museum of Pontevedra’s headquarters.
