Colegio de la Concepción de Nuestra Señora de San Sebastián (Gipuzkoa, España)Alternative forms (other languages) Other forms
from XVII to 1767
The founding of the College of the Society in San Sebastián was produced on the initiative of the city. The councilors assigned the basilica of Santa Ana in 1619 as the location for the house, chapel and school to be built. At first, they wanted to create a children school. The settlement was not accomplished until 1627 due to the opposition of other religious Orders already established in the town as well as the secular clergy, which mobilized the population against the Jesuits. Thus, the councilors cancelled their concession. This caused that the General of the Order had to take the priests to another place. In the following years, they returned to the city with the missionary activity, won the population over and caused again the rest of the Order's discomfort. This situation led to several lawsuits and sentences that did not finish until the intervention of the viceroy of Navarra setting the founding place. According to the sources consulted, it was in one of the houses given by María de Lezcano, the widow of the admiral Antonio de Oquendo, where they settled and operated until their expulsion in 1767.
Tras la expulsión de los jesuitas el Colegio fue utilizado como: hospital, casa de misericordia, cárcel y finalmente sería derribado y su espacio lo ocupa ahora la Plaza de la Trinidad.
