Colegio de San Ignacio de Loyola de Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa, España)Alternative forms (other languages) Other forms
from XVII to 1767
The College of San Ignacio de Loyola in Azpeitia, which is currently part of Loyola's Sanctuary, was built over the birth house of San Ignacio de Loyola. This college's creation was carried out thanks to the Queen Mariana of Austria, who bought the "casa del Santo" (the Saint's house) between 1681 and 1682 to give it to the Society of Jesus, where the college was founded. It is part of a complex that can be visited nowadays. We can find there the birth house of the Loyola family, which comprised a Basilica and a College. It worked as a pilgrimage centre too. In 1767, it became inoperative as the rest of Jesuit schools due to Charles III's Pragmatic Sanction.
