Colegio de Los Yébenes (Toledo, España)Other forms
from XVIII to 1767
The Jesuit residence in Los Yébenes was founded at the beginning of the 18th century, a period that where the opening of schools and houses of this order was maintained, even in the last years of the War of Succession. The existing documentation about these centres is very limited since in some cases they did not reached 50 years of activity. There were communities established in the nearby zones. However, the local governments and individuals continued requesting the presence of the Jesuit Schools in their territories to develop the teaching functions. In the case of the school in Los Yébenes, this activity was limited to the teaching of basic education (reading and writing) and grammar. The Jesuit School in Los Yébenes counted on 4 or 5 fathers and some other clergymen that helped the parish priests with their functions. The extinction of the Jesuit community in Los Yébenes was due to the Pragmatic Sanction issued on the 2nd of April 1767. There is no documentation that states if it was reopened when the Society of Jesus returned to Spain in the 19th century.
