History:

Saint, father, and doctor of the Catholic Church. He began his education, learning the rudiments of Latin and arithmetic, in his hometown of Tagaste. He later moved to Madaura, where he studied Latin grammar and literature. He converted to Christianity in the year 370 and moved to Carthage, where he studied rhetoric. He then went to Rome, where he eventually opened a school of rhetoric; from there, he moved to Milan. Around 395, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Hippo and became the titular bishop in 396 after the death of Valerius, the previous holder. As bishop, he had to confront two schismatic heresies: Donatism and Pelagianism.
