History:

This Carthusian monastery was founded in 1585 by Elena Roig, who wanted to comply with her deceased brother Cristóbal Roig's wishes. He was an old inquisitor and the precentor of Valencia's cathedral. The convent's work, which was managed by the Carthusian architect Brother Antonio Ortiz, started in 1602. In 1619, the building grew economically due to the prior Francisco Almenar's generous donations in order to continue with the work. The building was based on the Charterhouse of Aula Dei in Zaragoza. In the 19th century the monastery went into decline due to the War of Independence and the following secularizations. During the first one, the monastery suffered serious damages and lootings. Even though the monks returned when the monastery was reopened, it was closed for good in 1835 because of the decrees of secularization introduced by Mendizábal.
