History:

The Charterhouse in Jerez de la Frontera was founded by Álvaro Obertos de Valeto on the 3rd of May 1463. However, a conflict between Obertos and the prior of Seville's Charterhouse delayed its construction for several years. The Carthusians settled in the city in February 1476. Neverthelss, the monastery's work did not begin until the 17th of December 1478. It was interrupted after Obertos' death on the 11th of March 1482 due to a lawsuit on his goods between his maid and the monks. The work continued at the beginning of the 16th century and extended for several decades. The monks had to abandon the monastery in 1810 during the War of Independence (1808-1814). The building suffered serious damages because the French troops used it as headquarters. It was restored after the conflict. During the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823), the monastery was closed because of the Law about monasteries and convents of the 25th of October 1820. The monastery was abolished for good by the colonel Osorio on the 19th of August 1835 when he took over the city after the publication of the Royal Decree issued on the 25th of July. It exposed the abolition of monasteries and convents that had less than 12 practicants. The secularization was confirmed by the Royal Decree issued on the 11th of October and suppressed the monasteries.
