History:

International Red Aid (IRA) was an international social service organized by the Communist International in 1922, in order to function as an 'international political Red Cross', by giving assistance to communist political prisoners and by gathering the all-necessary material and humanitarian aid. It was disbanded in 1942. It sprung up as a charity organization in Spain, during the Asturian miners' strike of 1934. In the times of the Civil War, the writer Joaquín Arderías chaired the organization. Its main duties were feeding the children from the Republican area and supplying book collections to soldiers. They also made a contribution by building 275 hospitals, ambulances, and by conducting campaigns for dental hygiene.
